Game Overview

Super Castles came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed by Bits Laboratory. It was one of those early SNES titles that felt experimental, a side-scroller with a medieval theme that didn't take itself too seriously. At the time, the system was still new, and games like this showed off a mix of bright colors and quirky ideas that felt fresh compared to some of the more straightforward platformers.

You control a knight who gets launched from catapults, bouncing between castle towers while dodging fireballs from enemy wizards. The main goal is to reach the top of each stage, but the real challenge comes from timing your bounces and managing the knight's awkward, weighty movement. You explore screen by screen, sometimes backtracking to find keys or avoid hazards, and the pacing is deliberately slow, almost puzzle-like. It feels a little clunky at first, but there's a strange satisfaction in nailing a tricky jump and watching your knight flail through the air.
