Game Overview

Super Star Wars: Teikoku no Gyakushuu came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by LucasArts and published by JVC Musical Industries in Japan. It was part of that early wave of SNES games that tried to translate blockbuster movie action into the 16-bit format, with mixed but memorable results.

You control Luke Skywalker through side-scrolling levels, shooting stormtroopers with your blaster, jumping across chasms, and occasionally piloting a landspeeder or an X-wing in vehicle stages. The main goal is to progress through the story of A New Hope, from Tatooine to the Death Star trench run. Signature mechanics include switching between on-foot combat and vehicle sequences, as well as finding power-ups to upgrade your blaster's firepower. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving, especially during boss fights and the final assault. It feels like a genuine, if sometimes frustrating, effort to put you right in the middle of the Star Wars universe.
