You wrestle with janky flight controls while chasing hyperactive villains across a foggy, half-broken Metropolis—somehow it’s still kinda fun when you phase through a skyscraper mid-superhero pose.

Game Overview

Superman for the Nintendo 64 came out in 1999, developed by Titus Interactive. It was a late-era N64 release that tried to bring an open-world superhero experience to the console, though it arrived with plenty of technical limitations and a reputation for being rough around the edges. At the time, it stood out simply for letting you fly around as Superman, even if the execution was far from polished.

You control Superman, tasked with protecting Metropolis from various threats, primarily by stopping villains like Lex Luthor and Metallo. The main objective involves flying across the city, rescuing citizens, and fighting enemies using Superman’s heat vision, freeze breath, and super strength. The flight mechanics are notoriously awkward, making navigation a constant challenge, and the level design often relies on repetitive objectives like finding bombs or stopping invasions. The pacing is uneven, with moments of confusion punctuated by brief flashes of action. Despite its flaws, there’s a strange charm to soaring over blocky buildings and occasionally glitching through the scenery.
