Game Overview

Superstar Pro Wrestling came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, published by Pony Canyon. It was one of the many wrestling games trying to capture the sport's spectacle on the NES, a system that saw a lot of them, from Pro Wrestling to Tecmo World Wrestling. This one had its own take on the action.

You control a single wrestler, moving him around the ring to grapple with an opponent, execute slams, and try to get a pin. The main objective is to win your matches and climb the ranks. A couple of its mechanics stand out: you can run off the ropes to build momentum for a bigger attack, and there's a special submission system where you mash buttons to escape or apply a hold. The pacing is fast, almost frantic, with wrestlers bouncing around after big moves, and the difficulty can spike sharply against the later opponents. It feels like a scrappy, energetic brawl where a single mistake can cost you the match.
