Game Overview

Okay, so Tales of Phantasia (C) on the NES is this weird little time capsule—it’s technically the first Tales game, but most people never got to play this version. The graphics are basic (obviously), but within five minutes you’re already slashing through enemies in real-time instead of waiting for turn-based menus, which felt crazy for an 8-bit RPG.

The story throws you right into it: some dude wakes up in a ruined future, grabs a magic sword, and suddenly you’re hopping between timelines trying to stop an ancient sorcerer. The dialogue’s surprisingly punchy for an NES game, and the music? Absolute bangers, especially the overworld theme.

It’s janky in places—expect some awkward hitboxes in combat—but there’s something charming about how ambitious it is for an NES cart. If you’ve played the SNES version later, this one feels like a rough draft, but in a cool "look how it all started" way. Just don’t go in expecting polished SNES-level stuff.

Honestly, it’s more fun if you treat it like a curiosity than a full-blown classic. Still, swinging that Eternal Sword around never gets old.
