Tales of Phantasia came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, developed by Wolf Team and published by Namco. It was one of the later, more ambitious RPGs on the console, pushing the hardware with its detailed sprites and a surprisingly large world to explore.

You control a young swordsman named Cless, seeking revenge against a sorcerer who destroyed his village. The game mixes screen-by-screen exploration of towns and dungeons with real-time combat that happens right on the field; you attack, block, and use special Artes without switching to a separate battle screen. Your party grows to include a skilled archer and a powerful magician, and a major part of the journey involves traveling between different time periods to gather strength and allies. The pacing can feel deliberate, with some challenging enemy encounters, but the constant sense of uncovering a larger story makes the effort worthwhile. It feels like guiding a small group of friends through a genuinely perilous and expansive adventure.
