Game Overview

Oh man, Tales of Phantasia—this was my first proper JRPG love on the SNES. You start off thinking it's just another fantasy adventure, but then bam, time travel gets thrown in the mix. The whole thing feels way ahead of its time (no pun intended) with that active battle system where you're actually moving and slashing instead of just picking menu commands.

The translation patch by DeJap's a bit rough around the edges—some lines are weirdly capitalized, and there's the occasional typo—but it doesn't ruin the charm. You've got this ragtag group stumbling through different eras trying to stop Dhaos, who's way more interesting than your typical "evil overlord" type. Also, the soundtrack? Absolute bangers, especially the opening vocal track—wild for a 16-bit game.

It's janky in that classic SNES way, but you can see where the whole Tales series got its start.
