Game Overview

So, Tales of Phantasia starts off all peaceful—you're Cless, just a kid hunting boars with your buddy Chester in some quiet village. Then, out of nowhere, you find this weird talking tree begging for help, and before you can even process that, your whole village gets torched. Yeah, it escalates fast. Your dying mom drops this cryptic hint about your birthday pendant, and suddenly you're on a revenge trip that spirals into way bigger stuff than you bargained for.

The combat’s the real standout here—it’s not your typical turn-based JRPG. You’re dashing around in real-time, slashing enemies side-scroller style while your party does their own thing (AI can be a little… enthusiastic). Pause mid-fight to heal or tell your team to go all-out aggressive, though good luck keeping your mage from burning through all their MP in five seconds. The story’s got that classic ‘90s JRPG melodrama, but the combat keeps it from feeling stale.

It’s one of those SNES gems that tried something different and mostly pulled it off.
