Game Overview

Man, Tales of Phantasia still feels like magic—even after all these years. You start off with Cless, this sword-swinging hero whose village gets wrecked, and suddenly you're diving into a revenge plot that spirals into time travel, ancient magic, and some seriously cool party banter. The combat? Way ahead of its time. Instead of turn-based menus, you're dashing around slashing enemies in real-time, chaining attacks with spells from your teammates. Feels almost like a fighting game mashed up with an RPG.

And that soundtrack? Absolute fire. The SNES had no business sounding this good—or fitting in that voiced opening scene. Mint’s healing spells sound like glass shattering, and the overworld theme sticks in your head for days. It’s got that classic JRPG grind if you want it, but the story moves fast enough that you never feel stuck. Just be ready for some 90s-era difficulty spikes (looking at you, Dhaos).

If you’ve ever wondered where the Tales series got its heart, this is it. Still holds up, warts and all.
