I picked up Tetris Battle Gaiden on the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a release from Bullet-Proof Software. It was a time when every puzzle game tried to stand out, and this one took Tetris and made it a proper two-player duel. It felt less like a solitary race against the clock and more like a direct confrontation, something you could only really do with a friend on the couch.

You control the falling blocks like in any Tetris game, but your main objective is to bury your opponent under garbage lines by clearing your own. The signature twist is the use of special items; by building certain shapes, you earn points to unleash attacks. You can freeze their screen, making their blocks stop moving for a moment, or steal the next piece they were about to receive. The pacing is frantic because you're always watching their side, deciding when to strike or when to defend. It feels like a clever, chaotic back-and-forth where every move can be turned against you.
