Game Overview

Tetris Attack came out on the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It was part of that late SNES era where puzzle games were getting really clever, building on the foundation of games like Panel de Pon, which it's actually based on. You don't really think about that when you're playing, though; you just see the colorful characters and get pulled in.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent blocks, lining up three or more of the same color to clear them from the screen. The main goal is to stop the stack of blocks from reaching the top, either against the computer or another player. Its signature mechanics are the chain reactions you can set off, where clearing one group makes others fall and potentially create new matches, and the ability to send garbage blocks to your opponent's field when you clear a big combo. The pacing starts deceptively slow but can become frantic as the blocks rise faster, demanding quick decisions and spatial planning. It feels intensely satisfying to set off a huge chain you planned several moves ahead.
