Game Overview

I first played Tetris Attack on the Super Nintendo in 1996, a game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It arrived late in the SNES's life, a time when puzzle games were really finding their voice on the system, offering something distinct from the platformers and RPGs that dominated the era.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent tiles, lining up groups of three or more of the same color to clear them from the screen. The main objective is to prevent the stack of blocks from reaching the top by constantly clearing lines, which also sends garbage blocks to your opponent in versus mode. Its signature mechanics are the chain reactions from clearing blocks, which can set off huge combos, and the ability to slide entire rows horizontally to set up those big plays. The pacing is relentlessly fast, with the speed increasing steadily as you progress, demanding quick decisions and foresight. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against the inevitable climb of the blocks.
