I first played Tetris Attack on my Game Boy in 1996, a puzzle game published by Nintendo. It was part of that great wave of portable games you could just pick up and play, a real standout in an era dominated by platformers and RPGs. It felt like a fresh take on the falling-block genre, something you could easily get lost in during a long car ride.
You control a cursor to swap adjacent panels, trying to line up three or more of the same type to clear them from the screen. The main goal is to prevent the stack of blocks from reaching the top, which gets increasingly tense as the speed ramps up. Key mechanics include setting up chain reactions for big combos and sending garbage blocks to your opponent's side in versus mode. The pacing is quick and demanding, forcing you to think several moves ahead. It feels incredibly satisfying when you pull off a massive chain and watch the screen clear in one go.
