Game Overview

I first played The Clue back in 1994, when it came out as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series. It was developed by Neo Software, and it fit right in with the kind of exploratory, puzzle-heavy titles that were common on the platform at the time. There was no flashy 3D, just a straightforward, grid-based world that felt both simple and demanding.

You control a burglar moving screen by screen through various locations, casing each room for valuables and avoiding guards. The main goal is to plan and execute heists by memorizing patrol routes, picking locks, and grabbing loot without getting caught. Key mechanics include careful observation of guard patterns, inventory management for tools like lockpicks, and navigating multi-room buildings under time pressure. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense; one wrong move means starting over, so every decision matters. It feels like a quiet game of cat and mouse where patience is your greatest weapon.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
