The Great Battle Pocket is one of those Game Boy Color games that makes you wonder how they fit so much chaos into such a tiny cartridge. You’ve got Gundams punching Kamen Riders, Ultraman tossing energy beams—it’s like someone took a bunch of Bandai’s toy shelves and smashed them together into a side-scrolling brawler.
At first, I thought it’d just be mindless button-mashing, but there’s actually some strategy here. Switching characters mid-fight to chain attacks feels surprisingly slick, and the special moves are ridiculous in the best way. The pixel art’s got this chunky, colorful charm that makes every explosion look like it’s straight out of a 90s anime bumper.
It’s not perfect—some of the levels drag a bit—but the sheer audacity of cramming all these franchises into one game still puts a grin on my face. If you’ve ever wanted to see a super robot dropkick a masked hero, this is your chance.
