Game Overview

I first played The Great Giana Sisters back in the MS-DOS days, around 1987. It was developed by Rainbow Arts Software GmbH, and it stood out among the platformers of that era. The game was clearly inspired by Super Mario Bros, but it had its own strange, almost surreal charm that made it memorable in its own right.

You control either Giana or her sister Maria, navigating through side-scrolling levels filled with obstacles and enemies. The main goal is to reach the end of each stage, collecting diamonds along the way to unlock the exit. Signature mechanics include breaking blocks by bumping them from below, much like in Mario, and using collected power-ups to shoot fireballs at enemies. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with tight jumps and aggressive foes. Playing it feels like a slightly off-kilter, dreamlike twist on a familiar formula.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
