Game Overview

So, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is this weird, wonderful SNES game where you play as Goemon (or his buddy Ebisu-Maru) running around Japan beating up spirits and gambling away your cash. It starts simple—some ghosts show up at the temple, and off you go—but then it just keeps getting weirder. One minute you're smacking enemies for coins in a village, the next you're playing whack-a-mole or betting on dice in some random house. The shops and mini-games make it feel like a bizarre little vacation simulator, except you’re also a ninja.

Then, just when you’re used to the overhead view, the game throws you into full-on side-scrolling action stages. You’ll jump over traps, fight bosses, and even ride piggyback if you’re playing co-op (which is honestly the best way to play). The special moves are fun—if you remember to buy them first—but half the charm is just seeing what ridiculous thing the game throws at you next. Amusement parks, castles, trivia shows… it’s all here, and none of it makes sense in the best way.

It’s one of those games where you’re never quite sure what’s around the corner, but you’ll definitely want to find out.
