Game Overview

Ultima Gaiden: Kuro Kishi no Inbou came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, published by Pony Canyon. It was part of that wave of RPGs that tried to bring deeper, more serious stories to the console, with a moodier tone than a lot of its brighter, more colorful contemporaries. You could tell developers were starting to really push what the system could do with atmosphere.

You control a knight investigating a shadowy plot, moving through the world screen by screen. The main goal is to uncover the conspiracy by exploring towns, talking to NPCs (who aren't always truthful), and delving into multi-level dungeons. Combat is turn-based; you input commands for each party member, carefully managing health and magic. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush into encounters unprepared. It feels like slowly peeling back layers of a very dark, very personal mystery.
