Game Overview

I first encountered Video Poker Challenge as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a no-frills release that bundled simple diversions for early PC users. It was developed by a small team whose name escapes me now, but it fit right in with the era's straightforward, functional software. You didn't need a manual or a tutorial; it was just you, a virtual deck, and a command prompt waiting for input.

You play by making basic hold or discard choices each hand, aiming to build the strongest possible poker combination to earn credits. The core mechanics involve selecting which cards to keep before drawing new ones, with payouts scaling for better hands like straights or full houses. The game moves at a deliberate, thoughtful pace, and the difficulty comes from managing your virtual bankroll against the odds. It feels like a quiet test of patience and probability, a calm but focused way to pass the time.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
