Nintendo released VS. Ice Climber in arcades in 1984, a time when many games were built around climbing and jumping. It was part of the Vs. series, which often offered competitive or cooperative two-player versions of popular console games. This one adapted the NES title Ice Climber for the arcade environment, giving players a shared but often chaotic experience.

You control Popo or Nana, a small character armed with a hammer, and your goal is to climb a series of vertical stages by breaking through layers of ice above you. You jump between platforms, smash through ice blocks, and avoid enemies like seals and falling debris. The screen scrolls upward as you climb, and if you take too long, a condor might swoop in and steal the vegetables you're trying to collect. The pacing is fast, and the controls are slippery, making precise jumps a constant challenge. It feels frantic and unpredictable, especially with two players on the same screen.
