Game Overview

I picked up We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story for the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a game published by Hi Tech Expressions. It was one of those licensed platformers that came out around the time everyone was trying to get a piece of the 16-bit action, based on the animated movie that came out a couple years earlier. It didn't have the polish of the big Nintendo or Capcom titles, but it had a certain charm if you were into dinosaurs, which I definitely was.

You control one of four dinosaurs, each with a different ability, like Rex who can use his tail to attack or Dweeb who can jump higher. The goal is to navigate through side-scrolling levels, from a museum to prehistoric jungles, to rescue the other dinosaurs. You spend your time jumping across platforms, whipping your tail to defeat enemies (mostly cavemen and pterodactyls), and collecting eggs to earn extra lives. The pacing is a bit slow, and some of the hit detection feels off, making certain jumps more frustrating than they should be. It feels like a very standard, slightly clunky platformer that relies entirely on its dinosaur theme to carry it.
