I first played Alone in the Dark back in 1992 on MS-DOS, a game developed by Infogrames. It was one of those early PC titles that really tried to push what was possible with storytelling and atmosphere, even with the hardware limitations of the time. You could tell it was aiming for something more immersive than a lot of the arcade-style games or straightforward adventures that were common then.
You control either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, investigating a haunted mansion in Louisiana. The main goal is to uncover the secrets of the place and survive the horrors inside. Movement is screen by screen, with fixed camera angles that change as you enter new areas, and the controls take some getting used to. Combat is clunky; you swing weapons or shoot guns with limited ammo, and every enemy encounter feels tense because resources are scarce. The pacing is slow, deliberate, and the difficulty is unforgiving if you rush. It feels like a genuine struggle to stay alive and piece together the story.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
