Game Overview

Army Men on Game Boy Color came out in 2000, published by 3DO. It was one of those games that felt right at home on the handheld, a small-scale war you could carry in your pocket. At the time, a lot of games tried to translate bigger console experiences to the GBC, and this was a solid attempt to bring tactical toy combat on the go.

You play as Sarge, leading green plastic soldiers against the tan army across household environments like backyards and kitchen floors. Your goal is to complete missions, often involving destroying enemy bases or rescuing allies. You move screen by screen, using cover like books or soda cans to avoid fire, and pick up weapons scattered around, from rifles to grenade launchers. The pacing is methodical; you have to think about ammo and positioning, and the difficulty can spike if you rush in. It feels like directing your own miniature battle, cautious and satisfying when a plan comes together.
