Game Overview

Art of Fighting on the Sega Genesis came out in 1994, a port of SNK's arcade fighter. It arrived late in the system's life, a time when players were used to seeing big, detailed sprites, and this game certainly delivered on that front. You pick one of two main characters, Ryo or Robert, and set out to rescue Ryo's sister from a local crime boss.

You move through the city one fight at a time, facing off against a series of opponents. The game uses a spirit gauge that depletes when you perform special moves; if it runs out, you can't use them until it slowly refills. Another feature is the way characters show visible damage, with bruises and torn clothes appearing as the match goes on. The pacing is deliberate, the difficulty is steep, and landing a desperation move when your health is critical brings a real sense of relief. It feels like a rough but earnest translation of the arcade experience, demanding patience and precision.
