Game Overview

Art of Fighting, known as Ryuuko no Ken in Japan, came out in arcades in 1992 from SNK. It was part of that early 90s wave of fighting games, a time when every new cabinet tried to push the hardware a little further. It didn't have the massive roster of some other games, but it had a specific, gritty weight to it that made it stand out in a crowded scene.

You control either Ryo Sakazaki or his friend Robert Garcia, moving through a series of one-on-one fights to rescue Ryo's kidnapped sister. The game introduced a few things that felt new at the time, like a spirit gauge that depletes when you use special moves, forcing you to manage your resources carefully. It also had a zooming camera that would pull in and out dynamically during fights, making the characters look huge and their attacks feel more powerful. The pacing is deliberate, almost sluggish compared to later titles, and the difficulty is punishing; a single mistake can cost you a huge chunk of your life bar. It feels like a brutal, methodical brawl where every hit has serious consequences.
