Game Overview

I first played ASCII DOOM back in the 1990s on a friend's MS-DOS machine. It was a fan-made reinterpretation of id Software's original 1993 shooter, built entirely from text characters. The game ran in a standard terminal window, a common sight for PC users of the era, and it stripped the graphical powerhouse down to its barest, most abstract form.

You control a marine navigating maze-like levels, fighting off monsters represented by letters and symbols. Your goal is simple: survive, find the exit, and kill everything in your path. Movement is grid-based, screen by screen, with projectiles like your bullets or enemy fire moving in predictable patterns. The pacing is methodical, almost turn-based at times, but the limited view and constant threat of ambush keep the tension high. It feels like playing a nightmare version of a roguelike, where every corner could be your last.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
