I first played Ashes of Empire back in the early 90s, a 1992 release from Mirage Technologies for MS-DOS. It was part of that wave of strategy games that demanded a lot from your PC and your patience, sitting right alongside titles that were more about deep planning than quick action. You don't get flashy cutscenes; you get a map, some numbers, and a whole lot of problems to solve.

You control the last ruler of a fractured kingdom, managing resources, moving armies across a strategic map, and negotiating with rival lords who have their own agendas. The main goal is to reunite the empire by conquering or allying with all the other factions. Key mechanics include managing your food supply to avoid starvation and using spies to uncover enemy plans or sow discord. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is punishing; a single miscalculation with your grain reserves can lead to a full-scale revolt that ends your game. It feels like you are constantly putting out fires while trying to light a few of your own.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
