Game Overview

Back to the Future Part II & III came out on the NES in 1990, developed by Beam Software and published by LJN. It was one of many movie tie-ins from that era, and it tried to cover a lot of ground by mashing together events from both films. You could tell they wanted to give players a full tour of Hill Valley across different time periods, even if the hardware limited how much they could really show.

You control Marty McFly, moving screen by screen through levels based on scenes from the movies. Your main goal is to progress through each time period, from 2015 to the Old West, while avoiding obstacles and gathering items like hoverboard parts or fuel for the DeLorean. The game uses a mix of platforming and simple combat; you can punch enemies or throw objects, and sometimes you ride the hoverboard in auto-scrolling sections. It moves at a brisk pace, but the hit detection and some cheap enemy placements make it tougher than it should be. Playing it feels like a rushed trip through the films, where just getting to the next screen is an accomplishment.
