Battletoads on the Sega Genesis came out in 1993, developed by Rare and published by Tradewest. It was part of that wave of games trying to stand out with attitude and weirdness, a time when every character had to be a little edgy and a lot ridiculous. The Genesis version held its own, even if it played a bit differently from the one on Nintendo.

You control one of three Battletoads, brawling through levels to rescue your friend and stop the Dark Queen. Your main goal is to fight through each stage, but the game constantly shifts genres: you might be punching robots in a side-scroller one minute, then racing a speeder bike through a tunnel full of instant-death walls the next. Your fists actually grow bigger when you land hits, which is as satisfying as it is silly. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is brutal; it demands precise timing and memorization. Playing it feels like being thrown into a chaotic cartoon where every punch lands with a thick, crunchy sound effect.
