Game Overview

I first played Bomberman on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a game developed by Hudson Soft. It was a straightforward, grid-based action game that fit right in with the kind of quick, replayable experiences the SNES did so well, sitting comfortably alongside other puzzle and action titles of that era without trying to be the biggest or most complex game on the system.

You control the round, white Bomberman character, navigating a single screen filled with destructible soft blocks and indestructible hard blocks. The goal is to clear each stage by defeating all enemies using your bombs, which explode in a plus-shaped pattern after a short fuse. You break blocks to find power-ups that increase your blast radius, let you lay more bombs at once, or grant you special abilities like kicking bombs across the arena. The pacing is methodical but tense; you have to plan your routes and time your explosions carefully to avoid getting cornered or caught in your own blast. It feels satisfying to systematically clear a path and watch the stage open up as you progress.
