Game Overview

I picked up Bomberman: Panic Bomber on the PSP back in 2005, a time when Hudson Soft was putting out a lot of quirky puzzle games for handhelds. It was one of those releases that didn't get a ton of attention, but it had a familiar face from the Bomberman series dropped into a competitive match-three style game. The PSP was still pretty new then, and it was interesting to see how developers were experimenting with different genres on the system.

You control Bomberman himself, dropping colored bombs from the top of the screen to match three or more of the same color in a row, either horizontally or vertically. The main goal is to clear your own board while sending garbage blocks over to your opponent's side to overwhelm them. Key mechanics include setting off chain reactions for big combos and using special items that appear after large matches to disrupt the other player. Matches move quickly, and the AI can be surprisingly aggressive, so you have to plan your drops carefully to avoid getting buried. It feels frantic but satisfying when you pull off a huge combo and watch your opponent's screen fill up.
