You get crushed by brutal AI opponents or mess around with goblin chess pieces—either way, it’s shockingly deep for a GBA cart. Perfect for studying classic matches or just getting humiliated in public transit.

Game Overview

Chessmaster on GBA is exactly what it sounds like—a solid, no-nonsense chess game that somehow fits an entire chess tutor in your pocket. The first thing you’ll notice is the sheer variety: 18 different AI opponents, from total pushovers to absolute grandmaster-level nightmares. I lost my first match in about six moves, which was humbling.

There’s a full tutorial if you’re rusty (or, like me, just bad), and the replay library is packed with famous games to study. The chess sets are a nice touch—some are classic wood-and-marble, others are just silly, like the one where pawns are little goblins. And yeah, you can play against a friend if you dig up that old link cable.

It’s chess. But on a Game Boy. And honestly? It works way better than it has any right to.
