I picked up Donkey Kong 5: The Journey of Over Time and Space on the Game Boy Color back when it came out. It was one of those late-era releases for the system, developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, and it felt like a strange but ambitious send-off for the handheld. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it does throw Donkey Kong into a series of time periods, which gives the familiar platforming a fresh coat of paint.

You control Donkey Kong through side-scrolling levels, jumping across platforms and tossing barrels at enemies like robotic bees and dinosaurs. The main goal is to rescue Diddy Kong, who has been scattered across different eras, by collecting time fragments in each stage. Two mechanics stand out: using hourglasses to briefly slow down time, allowing you to dodge tricky enemy patterns, and riding on pterodactyls in certain prehistoric levels for added mobility. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages, especially with the screen occasionally distorting with visual glitches during chaotic moments. It feels like a hectic, slightly unpolished but genuinely inventive expansion of the classic formula.
