Game Overview

Edward Grabowski's The Blue & The Gray is one of those old-school MS-DOS games that somehow nails the feel of Civil War battles without drowning you in spreadsheets. You jump right in—pick your side, position your brigades, and suddenly you're sweating over whether to flank with cavalry or hold the line with infantry. The maps are simple, but that just means every move matters even more.

I love how it doesn't bother with tutorials or fancy cutscenes. You lose a few battles at first (probably because you sent your artillery too far ahead—I did that), but then it clicks. There's something weirdly satisfying about watching your pixelated troops push back the enemy after a dumb mistake turns into a lucky break. It's the kind of game where you finish a match and immediately want a rematch.

If you've got a soft spot for tactical games that don't overcomplicate things, this one's still worth firing up in DOSBox. Just don't blame me when you lose track of time trying to outmaneuver the AI.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
