Final Fantasy Legend III came out on the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Square. It was one of the later RPGs for the system, arriving when players were used to more complex adventures on the handheld. This one stood out for its time travel premise, a pretty ambitious idea for the hardware.
You control a party of four young heroes trying to prevent their world's destruction. The main goal involves traveling between the past, present, and future to alter key events and stop a flood of poisonous water. You explore towns and dungeons screen by screen, fight monsters in turn-based combat, and collect items to upgrade your characters. A unique mechanic lets you fuse monster meat into your party members during battle, which can permanently change their abilities and forms. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty is manageable if you take time to grind. It feels like a compact, thoughtful adventure that makes you consider how small changes ripple across time.
