Game Overview
If you ever wondered what happened before Cloud’s story in Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core fills in the gaps—and Zack Fair’s journey is way more intense than I expected. You play as this cocky but lovable SOLDIER operative working for Shinra, slowly realizing the company’s way darker than the shiny city of Midgar makes it seem. The whole cast shows up—Sephiroth before he lost it, a younger Tifa, Aerith selling flowers—but Zack’s the heart of it all.
The combat’s fast, mixing sword slashes and magic with this weird slot machine mechanic (the DMW) that randomly triggers limit breaks or buffs when matching faces line up. At first, I thought it’d be annoying, but it keeps battles from feeling repetitive. And yeah, materia’s back—fusing different orbs to create stronger spells never gets old. Just don’t get too attached to Zack’s cheerful attitude by the end.
It’s a PSP game, so the graphics are dated now, but the story hits harder than a Knights of the Round summon. You’ll recognize Nibelheim, the reactor, all those places that become important later. The ending? Still wrecks me.
