Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2007, developed and published by Square Enix. You control Zack Fair, a SOLDIER operative working for Shinra, completing missions across varied environments. Your main goal is to uncover the truth behind a series of disappearances within the company, which ties directly into larger events in the FFVII timeline. Combat is action-oriented, combining real-time sword attacks with magic and abilities through the Materia system. A unique mechanic called the Digital Mind Wave (DMW) constantly spins like a slot machine during battles, randomly triggering limit breaks, level-ups, or stat boosts. Mission structure is mostly linear but offers many optional tasks for grinding or extra story bits. The pacing is brisk, with frequent combat and cutscenes, though some optional missions can feel repetitive. Difficulty is manageable overall, but spikes occasionally in later boss fights. Playing it feels like steadily unraveling a personal tragedy you already know the ending to.
