If you ever wondered what Zack Fair was up to before Final Fantasy VII, this PSP prequel dives into his story—back when Cloud was just a rookie Shinra guard and Aerith was still selling flowers in Midgar. You’ll run into familiar faces like Sephiroth (before he lost it), Tifa, and even the Turks, but the real star is Zack himself—a cocky, lovable SOLDIER who slowly uncovers Shinra’s dark secrets.
The combat’s a fast-paced mix of hacking, slashing, and materia spells, but the weirdest (and kind of addictive) part is the DMW system—this slot machine-style reel in the corner randomly triggers buffs or limit breaks when matching faces line up. One minute you’re chaining sword combos, the next, the reels go wild and suddenly Zack’s unleashing a ridiculous super move. Materia fusion lets you cook up some wild combos too—I spent way too long mixing fire and cure just to see what’d happen.
Most of the story unfolds around Nibelheim, and if you’ve played FFVII, you’ll spot all the little moments that eventually tie into Cloud’s messed-up memories. It’s a solid action RPG with that classic FF charm, even if the slot mechanic feels a little random at times.
