Game Overview

Final Fantasy VII for the NES is an unofficial, fan-made demake of the original PlayStation game, developed and released unofficially in China. It was later translated into English by Xaronyr and EnCardier. This version attempts to recreate the story and mechanics of the 1997 classic within the technical constraints of the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, offering a unique, stripped-down interpretation of the familiar narrative.

You control Cloud Strife and his party through an abbreviated version of the Midgar and world map segments, engaging in turn-based combat, exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen, and managing a simplified version of the Materia system. The pacing is slow, with battles feeling particularly drawn out, and the translation can be rough in places, but there's a certain earnest charm to seeing such an ambitious project running on NES hardware. Playing it feels like exploring a curious, low-tech alternate reality of a story you thought you knew.
