Game Overview

I first played Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy on the NES back in 1991. Taito published it, and it was one of those licensed games that stood out a bit from the usual movie or cartoon tie-ins. It came out during that era when platformers were everywhere, but this one had its own quirks and a surprisingly earnest feel.

You control Fred Flintstone, moving through side-scrolling levels to rescue his pet dinosaur Dino and the hopparoo Hoppy. The game uses a screen-by-screen exploration style, where each screen is a contained challenge. Fred can slide to attack enemies or break blocks, and he throws rocks as his main projectile. The levels are filled with obstacles and enemies that require careful timing, and the difficulty can be pretty unforgiving, especially with some of the precise jumps. It feels like a mix of persistence and satisfaction when you finally get through a tough section.
