Flower Sun and Rain came out for the Nintendo DS in 2001, developed by Grasshopper Manufacture. It was part of that early DS era where developers were still figuring out what to do with two screens and a stylus, and this game definitely leans into the experimental side of things. You play as a "searcher" named Sumio Mondo, who arrives at the resort island of Lospass to investigate a series of bomb threats, but things quickly spiral into much deeper, weirder territory.

You control Sumio as he explores the island screen by screen, talking to a cast of eccentric and often unhelpful characters to gather clues. Your main tool is the "Millionaire" device, which you use to solve puzzles by inputting codes or combining items; it feels a bit like navigating a very obtuse, living database. The pacing is deliberately slow, almost meditative at times, but the puzzles can be brutally abstract, requiring a lot of trial and error and careful note-taking. Progress often hinges on remembering obscure details from conversations or re-examining locations you thought were finished. Playing it feels like being stuck in a very detailed, very frustrating dream where every answer is just out of reach until it suddenly clicks.
