Game Overview

Front Line - The Next Mission (Japan) is one of those Game Boy Color games you stumble on and think, "Wait, how did I miss this?" It's a Japan-only sequel to Taito's arcade classic, and it nails that old-school top-down shooter feel—like if Commando and a GBC had a weird, pixelated baby.

You start off dumped into enemy territory with just a gun and some grenades, and within seconds, bullets are flying from every direction. The controls are surprisingly smooth for a GBC game—no clunky tank movement here. You can actually dodge stuff instead of just eating bullets like in some of those early arcade ports.

What I love is how it keeps the arcade chaos but adds just enough strategy. Do you rush in guns blazing or pick off enemies from cover? (Spoiler: I always rush in and die immediately.) The chiptune soundtrack slaps, too—tense when it needs to be, triumphant when you finally clear a stage. It’s short, tough, and exactly the kind of game you’d replay just to beat your high score.

If you’re into retro shooters or just dig obscure GBC imports, this one’s a solid pickup.
