Game Overview

Fujiyama Buster came out in the arcades in 1992 from Taito, a time when side-scrolling action games were everywhere. You control a lone warrior climbing Mount Fuji, fighting through screen after screen of mythological Japanese creatures and obstacles. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it has a specific, almost frantic energy that sets it apart from other platformers of the era.

You move your character through a series of vertically and horizontally scrolling stages, attacking with a basic projectile weapon. The main goal is simply to survive the ascent, defeating enemies like oni and tengu while avoiding environmental hazards. Two mechanics define the experience: you can collect power-ups to change your shot type, and you must frequently dodge dense, patterned enemy fire that requires careful positioning. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, typical for an arcade game designed to eat quarters. It feels like a constant, tense scramble where one mistimed jump ends your run.
