Game Overview

I first played Gahan Wilson’s The Ultimate Haunted House back in 1994, when it came out as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series from Microsoft. It was a point-and-click adventure that stood out for its darkly comic art style, drawn by the cartoonist Gahan Wilson himself. At a time when many games were pushing for more realism or faster action, this one leaned into surreal humor and a deliberately oddball tone.

You control a small, unnamed character exploring a spooky mansion room by room. Your goal is to gather a set of keys to escape, but the real fun comes from interacting with the bizarre inhabitants. You trade strange items with monsters; for example, you might offer a sandwich to a ghost or try to bribe a skeleton. If you make a wrong move, the game punishes you with effects like rainbow static on the screen or a "sticky fingers" curse that makes you drop items. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, encouraging experimentation, though some puzzles can be obscure. Playing it feels like stepping into a twisted cartoon where every corner hides something unpredictable.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
