Game Overview

Gormiti on the DS is one of those weird little licensed games that somehow ends up being way more fun than it has any right to be. You play as these kids who transform into elemental warriors—earth, air, fire, water, the usual—but the combat actually feels pretty solid for a kid's game. Swinging the stylus to slash enemies never gets old, and each elemental form plays differently enough to keep things interesting.

What surprised me was how much personality the world has. The Gormiti designs are all jagged and exaggerated, like someone took a Saturday morning cartoon and cranked the "metal album cover" dial to 11. Lord Magmion looks especially ridiculous in the best way possible—all lava spikes and glowing eyes.

It's not deep, but for a quick action romp with some light puzzle-solving, it holds up better than most movie or TV tie-ins. The elemental switching keeps battles from getting stale, and there's something satisfying about plowing through hordes of weird rock monsters as a tornado-armed air warrior.
