Ikari Three: The Rescue came out in 1989 as an arcade game from SNK. It was part of that era where top-down military shooters were common, but it had its own take on the formula. You don't see it mentioned as often as some other titles from the time, but it had a solid presence in arcades.
You control a lone commando who must rescue prisoners of war from enemy camps. The game progresses screen by screen; you clear each area of soldiers and vehicles before moving on. Your character can fire a machine gun in eight directions and throw grenades in a high arc to hit enemies behind barriers. The pacing is aggressive, with enemies swarming from all sides, and the difficulty escalates quickly. It feels tense and demanding, especially when trying to protect the hostages you came to save.
