Jump! Ultimate Stars came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by Ganbarion and published by Nintendo. It was one of those games that really made use of the dual screens and touch controls, fitting right into that experimental era of the handheld where developers tried all sorts of clever ideas.
You control a team of characters pulled from various Shonen Jump manga series, battling it out on 2D stages. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's life bar by landing attacks, but the real depth comes from building a deck of interchangeable character panels that you swap between on the fly. You can call in assists, chain combos between fighters, and even construct a custom "koma" grid that determines your stats and available abilities. Matches are fast and sometimes chaotic, but thoughtful team composition and quick decisions give you an edge. It feels satisfying to set up a perfect switch and unleash a super move right when it counts.
