I picked up King of Fighters: Heat of Battle for the Game Boy back when it came out in Europe, a portable take on SNK's brawler by Takara. It was one of those late-era black cart releases, squeezing a console experience into your hands without much fuss or fanfare. You didn't expect arcade perfection, but it was there if you wanted to throw a few punches on the go.

You pick a team of three fighters from the KoF roster and battle through a series of one-on-one matches, working to deplete each opponent's health bar. The controls map surprisingly well to the Game Boy's two-button setup; you execute special moves with directional taps and button presses, and you can perform basic combos by chaining light and heavy attacks. Matches are fast and demand good timing, though the AI can feel cheap on higher difficulties. It captures that tense back-and-forth feeling of the arcade games in a compact, sometimes frustrating, but always engaging way.
