You ram enemies by running into them—sounds janky, but the bump combat just clicks. Those crunchy synth tracks and sudden anime cutscenes make it feel like unearthing a lost SNES gem.

Game Overview

Legacy of Ys - Books I & II is one of those DS remakes that actually does justice to the originals. You start off as Adol, the classic red-haired swordsman, just washing ashore with no memory—classic RPG stuff. But what surprised me was how snappy the combat feels—you don’t even press a button to attack, just bump into enemies at the right angle. Sounds weird, but it works.

The DS version keeps the old-school charm but adds these gorgeous anime cutscenes that pop up during big story moments. And yeah, the music? Still incredible. That opening village theme will stick in your head for days. The puzzles aren’t brain-melting, but they’re just tricky enough to make dungeons feel satisfying to clear.

If you’ve got nostalgia for 90s RPGs or just want to see where a lot of modern action-RPGs got their ideas, this double-pack’s a solid way to spend a weekend. Just watch out for those bats in the first cave—they’re way more annoying than they look.
