Game Overview

I first played The Lost Vikings on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a game developed by Silicon & Synapse, who later became Blizzard. It was a time when platformers and action games dominated, but this one stood out for its focus on puzzles and cooperation rather than just reflexes. Interplay published it, and it felt different from most things on the system, more thoughtful and deliberate.

You control three vikings, Erik, Baleog, and Olaf, each with a specific skill: Erik runs fast and jumps high, Baleog attacks enemies with a sword or bow, and Olaf uses his shield to block attacks or serve as a platform. The goal is to guide all three to the exit in each level, which requires careful coordination and switching between them to overcome obstacles. You explore screen by screen, avoiding hazards, collecting keys, and solving environmental puzzles that demand you combine their abilities. The pacing is methodical, and some puzzles can be quite challenging, demanding patience and experimentation. It feels clever and satisfying when a plan comes together and all three make it through.
