Mogul Maniac came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, developed by Amiga. It was one of many sports-themed games on the system, trying to capture the feel of downhill skiing with the hardware's limitations. You control a skier represented by a blocky sprite, navigating a slalom course down a mountain. The main goal is to pass through as many gates as possible without missing any or crashing into the obstacles. The screen scrolls vertically as you pick up speed, forcing quick decisions with the joystick. You can choose between beginner and expert slopes, with expert being brutally unforgiving; miss one gate and your run ends, though you keep sliding until the bottom. It feels frantic and slippery, a race against your own reflexes more than anything else.
